What To Do In An Accident

Step one relax! Accidents can happen to anyone....

Here are some handy guidelines to keep in mind in case you are ever involved in an automobile accident. Remember to remain calm so that you can gather all the necessary information and so that the situation doesn't escalate.

  • If after the accident your vehicle is still drivable, and if it is safe to do so move your car to a safe and secure location, just be sure it's near where the accident occurred as this is required by law. After moving to the side, be sure to stop your car. If you were to leave the accident scene you could be issued a warrant for your arrest or a traffic ticket as well. Note that if vehicle is not movable you should contact a tow truck company.

  • Ensure that all parties involved in the accident are OK. If anyone is injured you should call 911 immediately. All uninjured parties should move to a safe spot.

  • Make sure you exchange your contact information with all parties who were involved in the incident. Contact information would include: names, addresses, and phone numbers. You will also want to obtain the make, model and license plate numbers of all cars involved.

  • Obtain the insurance information for all parties involved as well. This would include their insurance carrier, insurance agent if possible and their policy number.

  • If there are witnesses to the accident try to obtain their contact information.

  • Get police advisement! You can call your local police department so that they can determine whether it is necessary to come to the scene of the accident. There are however a few instances when calling the police to come out will be necessary: Hit and Run accident, if there is a dispute between parties involved, and if there are any injuries.

  • If a officer does respond be sure you obtain his or her name, contact information and the police report number that they will issue to you.

  • Take pictures of any damages to vehicles! You should also snap some pictures of the accident scene. If you don't have a camera with you, use a cell phone camera or be prepared and always keep a disposable camera in your vehicle.

  • Whether the accident was your fault or not, DO NOT ADMIT FAULT! Simply follow the above mentioned procedures and be sure to cooperate and answer any questions that police officers may have for you.
